Many yogis would say playing music during yoga detracts from what it’s about. Backed up by the fact that you wouldn’t have caught BKS Iyengar listening to music during his practice. Perhaps they have a point I wonder. But what I also know along with many of my students is the lull of a good tune helps free the mind and give you that feel good factor. And isn’t that what yoga is about? Connecting with yourself and your senses by being fully present. Well for me it is. So for now I’m going with that feel good factor and that’s why I wanted to share my favourite playlist with you. They always say there are many forms of communication both verbal and nonverbal and practicing yoga is certainly one of them. You may never get the chance to converse with your yoga teacher or really get to know them but I can assure you that they can tell a lot more about you than you might think. Having taught for 6 years I have come to read the signs of body language as a gage to what is going on internally. This mainly falls into 4 categories: Those who find it hard to close their eyes and let go, those that fight battles with themselves when they can’t do the pose that there competitive side so wants to achieve, those who don’t push themselves hard enough and finally those who push too hard. Yoga is about balance and that’s what we try to achieve with our students. So next time your practising yoga perhaps bare that in mind (body and spirit…)

Having found the style you love (or maybe not, in which case follow the flow chart above) perhaps through many a trail and error ; those times where you’ve found your blissfully ignorant yogi self in some advanced Ashtanga workshop or in a Kirtan lengthy chanting session and you’re the kind of person who can barely bring yourself to murmur a faint Om!
